Metabolomics Society statement of inclusivity and diversity

Discrimination, racism and other forms of structural inequality are widespread issues in science. The Metabolomics Society acknowledges that many of us have benefited from the current structures, and we are actively taking a stand by examining and challenging existing structural inequalities. Diversity, equity, and inclusivity are the cornerstones of productive, innovative and impactful scientific communities, and we need to invest in these key factors to safeguard the future of our field. Thus, we will wholeheartedly support diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community.

The consequences of social injustices often disproportionately affect early-career scientists. The Metabolomics Society is committed to involving early-career metabolomics scientists in decision-making processes and empowering them to effect change, as they represent the future of science and academic leadership. The Board of Directors and the EMN are dedicated to promoting diversity among the Society’s members and committees and enable participation from all, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender identity, sexual orientation or other status.

Important note from Society BOD as of April 21, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

Since our previous communications regarding Metabolomics 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak is now a pandemic and is impacting every part of the globe. The Metabolomics Society Board of Directors and the Local Organizing Committee of the Shanghai meeting have been monitoring the situation closely. We have also listened to our membership and our sponsor’s input about organising an international meeting this year. We had hoped that we might be able to re-schedule the conference for December 2020 in Shanghai. However, following the continued spread of the disease we feel that it is unlikely that the Society will be able to hold a successful international meeting this year, and The Metabolomics Society Board of Directors and the Local Organizing Committee of the Shanghai meeting have therefore decided to cancel the 2020 conference.We want to convey to the membership that this has been a very difficult decision and forced upon us by the magnitude of the global crisis.

The Society Board has discussed creating an online international meeting for 2020. We are currently in the process of organising this meeting and we hope that you will consider supporting the endeavour to maintain our global research family online in one of our most difficult years. As you are aware, we all find ourselves in quite exceptional circumstances and we thank you for your patience. As previously announced, we will hold the next in-person international meeting in Niagara Falls, Canada in June 2021 and have agreed to return to Shanghai, China for the 2022 meeting.

Our thoughts are with those affected globally by COVID-19. We hope you and your loved ones are safe and that we will be able to meet again as a community in 2021. If you have any questions or comments, the Metabolomics Society welcomes feedback and we will respond to your inquiries. Further information can be found on the website in the coming weeks as we post updates.

Welcome to the Metabolomics Society Home Page. The Metabolomics Society is dedicated to promoting the growth, use and understanding of metabolomics in the life sciences. Metabolomics is a newly emerging field of "omics" research concerned with the comprehensive characterization of the small molecule metabolites in biological systems. It can provide an overview of the metabolic status and global biochemical events associated with a cellular or biological system. As such, it can accurately and comprehensively depict both the steady-state physiological state of a cell or organism and of their dynamic responses to genetic, abiotic and biotic environmental modulation.
